A great villa beautifully restored by Clay , a prominent photographer, it’s in A great area near Alba. You will need a car to cover the area which has many towns and many wineries selling the great wines of Barolo.
Also the food scene will not disappoint.
We had a fabulous stay at Villa San Lorenzo! The Villa has been lovingly updated yet retains its historic charm. The pool, the pizza oven, the gardens and the unbelievable views make this place very special.
The kitchen is well stocked and has everything you need. It is set up as a gorgeous, roomy gourmet kitchen and doesn’t feel like a rental. Loved having the large dining table in a bright room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the garden.
We had four couples in our group and it was so nice to have large, beautiful king size bedrooms all en-suite with views.
The best was the pizza night, our hosts, Clay and Erika, put on the night we arrived! Literally the best, most savory pizza we have ever tasted.
Thank you Clay for a wonderful stay!
Beautiful house with stunning views, in the peaceful hills of piedmont. The villa offers every comfort, there is a lovely pool and an authentic brick pizza oven. The host bakes them on request and is happy to share his passion for the region and wine. Thank you Clay for a wonderful week!
We just returned from an amazing week at Villa San Lorenzo and recommend it so highly! The location is perfect -- in a quiet town in close proximity to Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, and the Liguria Coast and amazing restaurants all over Piedmont. Good proximity to Turin and Milan airports. The local town, Doglani, also had wonderful meals, coffee, gelato, and supermarkets. The Villa itself was exceptional. A 400 year old estate, renovated with luxurious beds, air conditioning, a brand new chef's kitchen, a great laundry, and strong wifi. Fantastic views of the whole valley and neighboring vineyards from the beautiful outdoor seating area and outdoor pizza oven kitchen. The kids couldn't get enough of the pool or the beautiful grounds and enjoyed the play room upstairs. It is filled with lovely books, maps, and information about the region. And, one of the most amazing things about our stay was our host, Clay. He is passionate and knowledgable about the region; taught us about Lange wines, organized wine tastings, dinners, beach trips and even helped us plan when to leave to get to the airport. An exceptional week and so much fun for a larger group getting together!
Hello everybody,
We have just spent our holiday with my family in Villa San Lorenzo. As a very demanding Client, we asked Clay (the owner) to adapt the service to our needs, in particular complete privacy, peace and quiet, we did not want to be disturbed by the gardener, pool keeper, or the vineyard machine etc. Clay was a very professional host, who understood all our needs, who fixed with us any arrangements just to meet our expectations. Moreover Clay was always ready to help with any problems. All we saw in reality was the same we have been told before.
Very spacious clean swimming pool, beautiful garden, lots of nooks and crannies, good access to the beautiful villages surrounding Bonvicino, like Murazzano, Bossolasco, Dogliani, Mondovi or Alba.
Lovely house, situated in beautiful green hill overlooking the valley, surrounded by the sound of birds and fireflies. And only from time to time the bell from the old church located on the opposite hill could be heard from afar...
Thanks Clay, we hope to visit San Lorenzo in the future!
My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Villa San Lorenzo of Italian Wine Villas, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the heart of Piedmont, our luxury villa offered the perfect blend of privacy, natural beauty, and amenities.
The location is ideal for wine enthusiasts (like us!). Close to some of the finest wineries and vineyards in the region, like those in Barolo and Monforte d'Alba. The scenic drive through rolling hills and picturesque vineyards added to the charm of an outing.
One of the highlights was the incredible food. From the gourmet kitchen and brick oven at the villa when we cooked for ourselves after a day of visiting local markets to dining at one of the amazing nearby restaurants, every meal was a delight. We even had the opportunity to join a truffle hunt with a local expert, which was both educational and delicious. The black truffles we found were exquisite.
The villa itself was stunning, with beautifully renovated rooms that combined historic charm with modern comfort. The private grounds provided a serene escape, perfect for relaxing by the pool or enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
What truly set this experience apart was our incredible host, Clay. His hospitality was unmatched—generous with his time, provided excellent recommendations, and ensured that every detail of our stay was perfect. Clay's knowledge and passion for the region enhanced our visit, making us feel like VIP guests.
This place is a gem. Whether you're a wine aficionado or simply looking for a luxurious retreat, this villa is an excellent choice.
We rented the villa for a vacation with our group of 8 friends. It came as a recommendation from our friend Jenny. It’s was amazing. Rooms are awesome. Pool is awesome. The pizza oven was fun and kitchen was fully stocked. My one suggestion if you are with a big group is to make sure you have multiple rental cars so you can go out and do different things. The towns are all far away.
My husband and I rented the villa for a weeklong stay to celebrate a milestone Birthday with friends. The villa is truly breathtaking which ample space, large bedrooms and attached bathrooms for each room. The kitchen is a cooks dream and the outdoor space was superb with plenty of room for lawn games, reading, pool lounging and outdoor dining. The region is spectacular and the villa is situated close to numerous adorable towns. Clay and his team were exceptional and made our stay both memorable and stress free. I cannot wait to come back!
We were so fortunate to spend time at Villa San Lorenzo with family. Clay's hospitality and care made us feel completely at home. The space is a great place to gather with a large group while also feeling cozy and private. The rooms were so inviting and Clay has given much attention to details, both in preserving the history of the villa as well as to comfort of guests. We highly recommend getting away at VSL!!
Based on the photos, we expected the house to be nice, but it really exceeded our expectations in every respect.
First, a little background: This was a "Big Chill" weekend, gathering of old college friends and families in a special location. We were a bit worried, because there were 11 of us, some couples, some singles and a couple of teens along for the ride. So there had to be ample room to spend time together but 'private' space as well when we wanted to chill out. The villa was perfect. We each had bedrooms, with separate baths. There was the huge kitchen where we gathered to cook. And the large indoor table that easily fit all of us (and more) and the lovely granite slab outside under an arbor that led to long, languid lunches, fueled by too much wine. After these lunches, there was the upstairs living room where invariably one of our group would fall asleep on the couch.
The result was a really special week. We walked to surrounding villages, found lovely restaurants that easily accommodated us -- assisted by the owner Clay, who was full of suggestions. We stayed at the villa one day for a pasta lesson, which was also informative (and delicious). In fact, we enjoyed the chefs so much that we went to their restaurant later in the week, Osteria dei Binelli in Dogliani. We ate outside there until midnight.
Another day, Clay took several of us out on a wine tour, spending really in depth time with two wineries, taking tours of their cellars and tasting wines. These visits were separated by a really lovely lunch he set up, featuring some special cuvées. It's not a cheap day, but considering what we got I would say it was really good value since Clay is plugged into the food and wine scene in the region.
But what I recall most was the view of the surrounding hills from the pool, keeping the windows open at night and feeling the cool breeze, and the quiet of the area since it's in a secluded location in the hills. No wonder the resistance centered here during World War II. There are nooks, crannies, hills and gullies, great for walks, and just lovely surroundings. And the food markets in Dogliani were incredible, the people friendly and welcoming and not overrun by tourists. I highly recommend this place.
Our group of 9 adults was anticipating a nice time in Piemonte. What we experienced at Villa San Lorenzo exceeded all expectations.
Stunning views from the beautifully landscaped pool and garden terrace, you are surrounded by thick forest and gaze across the valley at rugged mountains. The property blends into this scenery very naturally.
We spent most of our time together in the well appointed kitchen and adjoining dining area where we enjoyed a pizza extravaganza prepared by Clay and his team Salvatore and Rosaria. It was a wonderful introduction on our first night.
In that same kitchen a few days later we were making pasta with Fabio and Christian, chef/owners of Osteria I Binelli in nearby Dogliani. Luckily for us, the restaurant, closed that day, came right to the villa! We enjoyed the three course meal the whole afternoon (and that evening, and the next day).
Clay arranged it all. He set up a wine tasting for us at Pecchinino where we met lovely dolcettos from Dogliani. He recommended farmers markets, wine bars and restaurants throughout the region. They were all great finds. We got big smiles when we told them "Clay sent us". He responded quickly to our questions and was a gracious and welcoming host.
The bedrooms are decorated tastefully and the beds invite you to climb inside. Two of the bedrooms are on the first level of the main house, three are on the second level, two are accessed outside of the main house. One of these is a very private room, isolated from the rest of the activity and accessed via an outside staircase. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, some have stairs inside the rooms.
There is also a living room loft above the kitchen and dining area with comfy seating. Last but not least there's a second, fully appointed kitchen and living room area on the main level.
There are a number of hikes or walks or strolls to take from the villa in the woods when you need a break from all the relaxing.
We loved our time at Villa San Lorenzo and wish we could have stayed longer. Clay has created an environment for an immersive experience in the region. We're already planning our next visit.
My family spent 3 weeks at VSL last summer. We love to cook, and were originally drawn to the kitchen and pizza oven at VSL. While these were the initial interest points, we quickly realized what a special property we had found. Our family stayed in the main house, which worked well for our smaller group. The property is also versatile enough to hold multiple families each of which can have their own separate living space. There are multiple indoor and outdoor spaces, including a pool, which we used throughout our stay. Clay is an amazing host, who has unique access to the food and wine community in Piedmont. Clay prepared a welcome basket for our first couple of nights, including vegetables, proteins, and wine that was perfect when we arrived. We toured several wineries together; Clay is friends and has close relationships with everyone across Piedmont, so the interactions are deeper and more personal. We learned how to make bread, and pizza, and even created a bread starter that we are still using! It’s helpful to have a car while staying at VSL, but if you wanted to come without a vehicle that’s something that Clay could work out since he drove us on all of our winery visits. At one point during the trip, our son was sick and Clay arranged for a doctor to come to the house; he is accessible for things that happen which may be unexpected during your time in Italy. Clay has lived in Piedmont for more than a decade, so he can design a custom itinerary for whatever you would want to do. We hope to have the chance to return again!
We spent a week at Villa San Lorenzo with friends in early April (2017) and had a wonderful time. The Villa is a perfect spot for a group or family gathering and is roughly an hour drive to the Ligurian Coast to the South, Torino to the North and views of the Alps right outside your door. The Villa itself has been wonderfully restored and has all of the creature comforts of a modern home, yet the charm of an old farmhouse. The chef's kitchen and dining room were put to good use during our visit as we had three meals prepared at the Villa by local chefs (would highly recommend), including a day where we learned the art of making fresh pasta. I would say one of the more popular experiences we spent in the Piemonte was our pizza dinner prepared by our host (Clay) in the wood burning pizza oven. An array of homemade pizza's and plenty of local wine (did I mention, the villa is about 10 minutes from Barolo and 15 minutes from the Barbaresco region).
If you are a foodie, I don't know how you could be disappointed with this place or the experience that we had during our stay. I would recommend allowing Clay to guide you to the various restaurants, wineries, etc. as he knows all of the best spots and only enhanced our experience. Can't wait to visit again!
Villa San Lorenzo is an amazing property with all the amenities you'd expect in a luxury hotel. The pool is gorgeous, the setting is breathtaking and the location is perfectly central to the heart of wine country.
I stayed with my wife for a week and I have to say what really made the difference was the personal connection that Clay delivered both in terms of hospitality but also regarding connections and accessibility to local wineries and restaurants that we would have otherwise not even known about.
The people we met, the wine makers, the chef's and the local farmers were all so welcoming, it was beyond just staying in a Villa. The experience of meeting locals and being treated like old friends is what will stick with me and what made our stay at Villa San Lorenzo so special. We really look forward to visiting again soon and can't say enough about the entire experience.
Amazing Villa. Spectacular Region. Excellent Hosts.
We booked Villa San Lorenzo during Truffle Hunting season for a friend's 40th birthday and had a fantastic time in this villa. Our group of 16 was large, but the layout of the villa rooms gave everyone space and privacy outside of the large common area with amazing windows looking out to the lovely villa grounds. Every room has a designated bathroom, which is key to confort. Also, the kitchen is a foodie heaven, so much that our group mostly stayed in at nights to cook Vs going out to all the great restaurants in the region. The owners, Clay and Tamar have done an exceptional job with this property. Most importantly, they are amazing hosts, taking care of a multitude of details and requests for such as large group, including: wine tasting tours, pre-arrival food shopping, pasta cooking lessons at the Villa with a local chef (best pasta dish we ate during our whole trip was part of this experience) and a lovely truffle hunt with an authentic truffle hunter. Highly recommend this villa to both large groups and families looking to spend quality time in Piedmonte.
Villa San Lorenzo is a true hidden gem in the Piedmont region of Italy. We spent 4 amazing days with our 6 and 9 year old kids soaking in the culture, food and life of this incredibly bucolic region. Thanks to the warm attention of villa owners Clay and Tamar, we discovered the rich cuisine of the region and even enjoyed a special evening on the villa's patio savouring Clay's homemade gourmet pizzas made in an outdoor authentic stone-brick wood fired pizza oven. We look forward to another visit soon.
This lovely home boasts a private apartment with two big bedrooms and two full baths. The kitchen was large and well-equipped and looked out over the hills of the Langhe. We enjoyed out coffee on the balcony listening to the birds and our wine in the evening, watching the sunset over the hills and the sky fill with stars. The huge bathtub made for a divine soak, with the windows thrown open to the afternoon air. The beds were extremely comfortable and the wi-fi worked quite well. We found fabulous local treats on the counter and good stemware for the wines we kept buying! A great stay off the beaten path to truly absorb the peace and beauty of the region - and highly recommended property. Clay and Tamar were gracious and extremely hospitable and more than willing and able to point us in the direction of amazing wineries, restaurants and local sights. We'll be back to use the beautiful pool!
